“Would you like a cold wet towel?”

This is what I was asked while checking into my hotel. It was a hotel technically, but it wasn’t like any hotel I’d ever been to before – this was paradise.

I was afraid they found out how much I paid to stay here and were already putting me to work to launder the pool towels.

Then I looked down and saw the tray of petite rolled washcloths stacked neatly, they looked clean. I picked one up and it felt chilled and especially refreshing after the not-so-chill shuttle to the resort from the Cancun International Airport.

I picked it up, and wiped my hands – is this what I’m supposed to do? – I put it to my face peeking at my then-girlfriend-now-wife and copying her, knowing very well that she doesn’t know what she’s doing either.

We telepathically made a face agreeing that “we don’t belong here, this towel smells better than our bath and body works hand soap at home.”

This was the experience that led me here to your screen today. We were in our younger-mid 20s and we stayed at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun with a $600/night price tag for $0.

We were in awe the entire time and fell in love with the feeling of “not belonging here.”
